Since we met ten years ago, both Nicky and his partner Daphne have become staunch supporters of all my projects, either becoming part of the book LoVe, contributing to The Jazz Issue of Collage Magazine or performing in my book launches and the private views of my exhibitions.
A few months ago, we were leafing through some photos I had taken during one of their gigs at the Clarence Club in Malaga when Nicky pointed out that at the end of that show, a luthier from Granada approached him card in hand with the following words: “I make guitars for musicians like you”. Nicky put the card into his pocket and once back home started to contemplate the possibility of having a new tailor-made guitar, an instrument that reflected his musical maturity.
Once at the luthier’s workshop, he showed him a reddish piece of wood with a unique sonority, and one year later “Jimena” was in his hands.
When Nicky told me this story, I decided to make him the protagonist of this book. The setting is as special as the model: the boat-shaped building where his school is located.
Desde que nos conocimos hace más de diez años, tanto Nicky como su compañera Daphne se han convertido en colaboradores incondicionales en todos mis proyectos, ya sea el libro LoVe, el Jazz Issue de la revista Collage o la presentación de cada nuevo libro o exposición.
Hace unos meses, mientras veíamos unas fotografías que les había hecho durante una actuación en el Clarence Club de Málaga, Nicky me comentó que ese mismo día, nada más terminada la actuación, se le había acercado un luthier granadino que tarjeta en mano pronunció estas palabras: “Yo hago guitarras para músicos como tú”. Nicky se la metió en el bolsillo y al llegar a casa empezó a reflexionar, llegando a la conclusión de que había llegado el momento de encargar una nueva guitarra a medida que reflejara toda su madurez musical.
Una vez en el taller del luthier, éste le mostró una madera de color rojizo con una sonoridad única y un año más tarde la Jimena estaba en sus manos.
Cuando Nicky me contó esta historia decidí hacerle el protagonista de este libro. El escenario es tan especial como el modelo: el edificio en forma de barco donde se encuentra su escuela.
